Mouth Guard for Grinding

By , March 25, 2010

Bruxism is the medical terminology for someone who clenches or grinds their teeth, this often happens unknowingly to the person while they sleep.

If you know you suffer from bruxism then you definitely need to purchase and use a mouth guard for grinding.

In most cases, bruxism doesn’t cause any serious complications or cause any problems.  But severe bruxism may lead to:

  • Damage to your teeth (including restorations and crowns) or jaw
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Facial pain
  • Temporomandibular disorders — which occur in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), located just in front of your ears and felt when opening and closing your mouth

Suggestions When Purchasing A Mouth Guard for Grinding

Make sure that your mouth guard for grinding is comfortable and fits well.  Your mouth night guard should protect both your bottom and top teeth and extend all the way to the back of the mouth.

Look for a thinner mouth guard, as thicker ones are for high impact sports like hockey, football and boxing but typically any teeth guards will do.

Football Mouthpiece

By , March 25, 2010

No one will deny that football is a high impact sport.  And aside from the protective gear that you wear on your body, a football mouthpiece is absolutely essential to your protection and safety.  A good football mouthpiece will prevent concussions and prevent dental injury.

When purchasing a football mouth guard make sure that the football mouthguard fits well and is comfortable.  It should protect your top teeth as well as your bottom teeth, so you may want to look into purchasing a  double mouthguard – one that protects your top and bottom teeth.

Because football is also a relatively high impact sport, look for a football mouth guard that is about 4mm in thickness.  Higher impact sports such as boxing will require thicker mouthguards and lower impact sports such as tennis will require thinner mouthguards.

  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Autosports
  • Motorsports

Double Mouthguard

A double mouth guard is a mouthguard that protect the upper and lower jaw joint.

The characteristics of a person’s upper and lower jaws are quite different. The lower jaw is capable of a wide range of motion, which means that when a blow lands on the jaw or teeth some of the force of the blow will be buffered by the jaw’s reactive motion.

In contrast the upper jaw is fixed in position meaning that a greater portion of the force of the blow will be directly absorbed by the teeth and jaw bone.  This difference, is one of the reasons why a person’s center two upper teeth are the most likely teeth to be damaged by an accident.

In some instances a double mouthguard can be relatively more uncomfortable to wear and therefore an athlete may not use it as consistently as a single mouth guard.

Double mouthguards are recommended for those who have braces and therefore require both lip and cheek protection from their brackets and wires.

When choosing a double mouthguard makes sure that all the back teeth are covered.  Some studies have suggested that mouthguards that fail to cover over a significant number of the posterior teeth can place the athlete’s lower jaw at greater risk of fracture.

If you participate in mixed martial arts then you absolutely need to purchase a MMA mouthpiece.  A proper MMA Mouthguard will help prevent concussions and protect your teeth and dental work, including veneers, braces.

Although you may not think so, mixed martial arts are a high contact sport much like boxing, hockey and football.

When a hit or blow is delivered to the mouth, the force of the impact is absorbed by the teeth.  This forceful impact can easily cause tooth fractures, cause tooth dislodgement, or damage existing dental work.

If you practice mixed martial arts and have never considered using or getting a mouth guard, now is the time to start.

Tips for Buying an MMA Mouth Guard

Make sure the mouth guard fits well and is soft, yet rigid.

Your back teeth as well as your front teeth should be well covered.   Make sure your mouth guard is comfortable.

If it doesn’t fit well, look for another mouth guard.

Hockey Mouth Guard

By , March 24, 2010

Hockey is a high contact sport and hockey mouth guards are absolutely mandatory at at several different levels in hockey as it is believed to prevent concussions.

In 2002, Dr. Brian Benson published a study on the risk factors for concussion among 642 male hockey players wearing either full face shields or half face shields (visors).  He and his colleagues found that the use of a full face shield significantly reduced the playing time lost because of concussion as compared with the use of a half face shield—suggesting that the severity of concussion may be reduced.  The study also seemed to suggest that hockey mouth guard use reduced concussion severity.

Aside from prevention concussions, a hockey mouth guard can also help provide is protection against damage to teeth and dental work such as dental crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, and dental implants.  When a blow is delivered to the mouth the force of the impact is absorbed by the structures the blow lands upon.  In the case of hard oral tissues such as teeth, a forceful impact can easily cause tooth fractures, cause tooth dislodgement, or damage existing dental work.

So make sure you have a good quality hockey mouth guard before you play your next game.

Basketball Mouthguards

By , March 24, 2010

Most people don’t think twice about wearing a mouthguard when playing basketball, they dismiss mouthguards as only for “higher contact” sports like hockey and football.

However, you may be surprised to learn that one study showed that at least at the student level the incidence of mouth injury was actually higher for basketball and soccer athletes than for football and hockey players.

Basketball players were found to be twice as likely to sustain a mouth injury in comparison to football players.

Therefore you should definitely look into purchasing and using a basketball mouthguard before your next game if you want to protect yourself.

Tips When Choosing A Basketball Mouthguard

Make sure the basketball mouthpiece fits into your mouth well.

The plastic should also be relatively spongy, but still stiff to help absorb a portion of the force by any contact.  The stiffness of a sports mouthpiece will allow it to help distribute a delivered blow over a larger surface area, thus buffering the amount of direct force any one tooth or mouth area is subjected to.

If your basketball mouthguard is too rigid, it may irritate your gums and the soft tissues of the mouth when you wear it.

As basketball is a low contact sport, you can choose a thinner mouth guard for protection.  Higher contact sports such as boxing, require thicker mouth guards.

Boxing Mouth Guard

By , March 24, 2010

If you are a boxer you must use a boxing mouth guard every time you go into either a sparring session or you are actually fighting.

A boxing mouth guard helps to protect your teeth and concussions from occurring during fights. You always want to have your mouth closed and protect your chin while you are boxing. If your chin is open and you get hit, it’s easier for you to go into the knock down position where somebody can knock you down easier.

So again, get a good boxing mouth guard and always keep your mouth closed no matter what you are doing, even if you are doing sparring drills, or sparring sessions and especially when you go into a fight wear a boxing mouth guard, unless you want to lose your teeth.

Considerations When Purchasing A Boxing Mouth Guard

Always make sure that your boxing mouth guard is comfortable and stays in place.  Your mouth guard shouldn’t be bulky, irritates your teeth or the soft tissues of your mouth.

You can also adjust your mouth guard by trimming off some of the plastic on the mouth guard.  However, please keep in mind that any portion of a mouthguard that is trimmed away may compromise the level of protection that the guard provides.

Boxers and athletes are sometimes hesitant to wear their mouth guards because they have trouble speaking or breathing when they wear them.  These problems however commonly arise from ill fitting mouth guards, so always make sure that your mouthguard is nice and snug.

Also as boxing is a high contact sport, make sure you buy a nice and thick boxing mouthpiece.  4mm+

Shock Doctor Strapless Mouth Guard Testimonials

This is definitely the best mouthguard I’ve ever used. I’ve tried a few cheap ones that didn’t mold properly, but I had no such problems with the Shock Doctor. The gel was very malleable after the boiling, and it conformed perfectly to my teeth. After cooling, it held its shape perfectly and was squishy enough that it held onto my teeth when I spoke. It has a great deal of cushion to it and it had no problem surviving tough training.

I had to buy a mouthguard for my jiu jitsu classes, and so I chose these. I’ll be honest, I chose them because they came in pink! I’ve never used a mouthguard before now, but I found these real easy to use. The instructions were clear and it took me a whole 5 minutes to mold them to my mouth. My jaw size is on the small/average size, so anyone with an extra large jaw might have an issue.

I kept these in throughout my class and never had a problem breathing or swallowing. I didn’t end up looking like a rabid dog either ;) The different colors choices are really nice, and the price is good too.

My daughter uses this for protection in martial arts and she says it is more comfortable than the cheaper $2 mouthpieces. Seems to be made of quality stuff and would buy again.

Stays closed in my bag, well ventilated, fits my mouth guard well. I can see how it might come open too easily, but it hasn’t been an issue for me. Only thing is that another guy at the gym has exactly the same case and mouth guard, so I had to put a sticker on my case so we could tell them apart more easily. – Paul Konasewich (San Mateo, California)

Love the fact you can attach this case to your gym bag strap, this is the main reason I bought it. I had a regular case but it was always a pain to be feeling around my gym bag trough all my MMA/BJJ gear to find my mouthguard.
I like the fact it has a vent so it gives the mouthguard a chance to dry after you store it. – Louis (Florida, USA)

I train in Mixed Martial arts and this case hooks to my training bag so I always have my mouth piece. – K Hamby

Shock Doctor Pro Mouth Guard Testimonials

My dentist is going to extract 5 of my teeth this coming Friday. I don’t look forward to that at all, but he has to. I broke off my front tooth at the base. My other front teeth are loose, so he wants to pull all of my front teeth and give me a removable bridge. He noticed that I’ve broken 3 crowns in my mouth because of my grinding.

Well, rather than pay the 5 hundred bucks for a molded mouthpiece made by the dentist, I ordered this. It works fine.

I also have sleep apnea, so I’m a mess at night. But, it’s easy to shape with the boiling water, and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than the 5 bills.

My teeth are going to cost me a fortune on top of that, Get it, I have no complaints, other than misplacing it every day.

I use this mouth guard for when I train krav maga. It fits well and is not uncomfortable.

I use to wear the double mouth guard but found that it was hard to talk and breath with it on. This is a great mouth piece.
